#013: Why Your Podcast Needs a Strong Point of View
How Having a Clear Stance Can Turn Your Show from Background Noise to Must-Listen Content
Have you ever listened to a podcast and thought, “Hmm... it’s fine, but it’s not really saying anything”?
Hard truth: content that doesn’t have a strong perspective quickly gets lost in the noise.
When Matthew Holman, founder of Subscription Prescription, joined me on the Podjunction Podcast, he hit the nail on the head with: content needs a clear stance if you want to stand out. And you don’t need to be controversial—you just need to have something to say!
Here’s what really stuck with me:
🎯 Your Content Needs a Point of View
If your content doesn’t have an opinion, it’s background noise. But when you share your perspective, even in a crowded space, you give your audience a reason to say, "Yes—this is my kind of content!"
🛡️ Find the "Enemy" (It’s Not What You Think!)
Your "enemy" could be an outdated practice, a frustrating tool, or even a common misconception your audience faces. Matthew gave a great example of a company positioning NetSuite as their "enemy" to show why their product was the better choice. It’s not about being combative—it’s about being clear on what you stand for (and what you don’t).
🎙️ Why This Is Key for Podcasts
Even niche podcasts—yes, even a podcast about crocheting—need a stance! Maybe you think certain techniques are outdated, or you have a strong take on what beginners really need to know. That perspective is what makes your audience go, “Finally, someone gets it!”
Here’s the real lesson:
Sharing your opinions isn’t just about standing out—it’s about building trust with the right people. Your ideal audience will see themselves in your content and think, “This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!”
What’s one strong opinion you’ve shared through your content? How did it land?
