#008: Painting Big Dreams with a Toothbrush
How I Learned to Let Go of Overwhelm and Focus on What Really Matters
Ever feel like you’re trying to paint a full-on mural with a toothbrush?
A few weeks ago, that was me. I could see the big picture — clear as day — but felt overwhelmed by everything it would take to bring it to life. My brain felt like a sieve, spilling details faster than I could catch them. So, I made lists. Paper lists. Digital lists. More lists. But nothing stuck.
Give up? Not an option.
Hire help? I sure wanted to, but the timing was off.
Admitting I couldn’t do it all felt like failure. Like I was letting everyone down—including myself. But it wasn’t. It was a turning point. Letting go gave me room to focus on what mattered most. I asked myself: What needs my attention today? What can wait? That clarity changed everything.
When I stopped trying to do everything, the things I focused on started to thrive. It’s not about how much effort you give — it’s about where you put it. Even one intentional stroke can transform the picture. Balance isn’t doing it all; it’s directing your energy to what counts.
This isn’t really about painting murals — it’s about life. Podcasting, business, career goals — the big picture can feel overwhelming. But it’s in those moments of challenge that we stretch, adapt, and grow.
As podcasters, we often feel the need to get everything perfect right away. But, like Steven Pemberton shared on Podjunction Podcast, progress doesn’t have to be perfect— it just has to keep moving. Early in his podcasting journey, Steven struggled with imperfect episodes and considered giving up. Instead, he focused on small, actionable changes, repurposed his content, and refined his approach. Today, his Voice Like A Lion podcast engages listeners and delivers real impact.
The lesson? Small, consistent adjustments—whether in storytelling, format, or focus —lead to big wins over time, even when things feel messy at the start.

So, what about you? Are you giving yourself the grace to take it one step at a time? Sometimes, all it takes is one stroke to move that proverbial mural forward — even if that stroke is with a toothbrush.
